Insemination

Assisted reproduction: technique, science, and respect

Artificial insemination applied to great bustards imprinted since birth

Artificial insemination is a key tool in the conservation of endangered species such as the great bustard (Otis tarda).

At our center, we have been successfully applying this technique for years, based on imprinting from birth and a relationship of complete trust between the bird and its caretaker. We have a valuable stock of males and females specially prepared for this process, the result of years of training, observation, and dedication.

Making an impression from day one

The great bustards used in artificial insemination programs have been imprinted since their first day of life at our facilities. This means that they have grown accustomed to human presence, associating their caretakers as part of their natural environment.

Thanks to this process, the birds develop social and reproductive behaviors in a controlled environment, allowing for their active and voluntary participation in breeding programs.

Voluntary copulation on adapted lures

Unlike invasive methods, our male great bustards have been trained to mate completely voluntarily with decoys specially designed for this purpose. This strategy allows semen to be collected safely, respectfully, and with exceptional quality.

The result is a sufficient and viable amount of semen, optimal for fertilizing a large number of females, also imprinted at our center.
