Steppe Bird Breeding Center

Sanlúcar de Barrameda

Committed to life in freedom

From the heart of Cádiz, we work to recover steppe birds such as the great bustard, the little bustard, and the stone curlew.

We research, breed, and collaborate so that these species continue to be part of our environment.
We are a center dedicated to the captive breeding and conservation of steppe birds in Andalusia.

From our facilities in Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Jerez de la Frontera, we develop scientific programs to protect endangered species and educate about their ecological importance.

The species we care for

The steppe ecosystem is home to some of the most emblematic and endangered birds in southern Europe. At our center, we focus our efforts on species such as the great bustard, the largest flying bird in Europe, and the little bustard, which is becoming increasingly rare on the peninsula.

We also protect other species such as the stone curlew, the sandgrouse, and the ortolan bunting, which are essential to the balance of the habitat. All of them face threats from habitat loss, changes in land use, and human pressure.

Our daily work seeks to reverse this trend with concrete and measurable actions.

A mission with wings

Free-range horse breeding

In addition to our work in conserving steppe birds, we keep a small herd of horses at the center that live in semi-freedom, in complete harmony with the natural environment. These animals are part of the center’s landscape and play a fundamental ecological role: they help maintain the balance of the ecosystem, naturally controlling vegetation and promoting biodiversity in the area.

Our horses, which are hardy and well-adapted to the environment, are raised with respect, following animal welfare principles. Their presence not only enriches the rural area, but also adds value to the sustainable management model we advocate. They are calm, well-cared-for animals that are in constant contact with nature, which translates into health, balance, and nobility.

At certain times of the year, some of these horses are available for sale or collaboration with other livestock farms, always guaranteeing traceability, ethical management, and genetic quality.
